Wedding photographer, Walter Van Dusen photographs from an “Insider’s Point of View.” Taking that same approach, he revolutionized wedding photography conferences, founding the wildly successful Mystic Seminars by thinking “What would I want as an attendee.”
Walter’s Thoughts On The Art1095 Project
While viewing David’s work, I get a sense of timelessness and sense of place. It takes time, to absorb in all of the elements of Davis’s work. The lighting, posing, set design and the overall feeling are impeccable. Timeless masterpieces.
Walter’s Thoughts On David
I met David during one of my speaking engagements in Dallas, Texas. I learned that David was a mentor and teacher himself. We spent time talking with one of the photographers that he was mentoring, Paul Ernest, who himself is an amazing photographer. Together, we encouraged Paul to start entering print competitions. This encounter is a very fond memory for me.
I also had David and Luke speak at Mystic Seminars. It was a very emotional experience for me because I lost my father to cancer shortly before Mystic Seminars began. I felt great joy and happiness to have father and son speaking together on stage after Luke almost lost his father. I have not met ant nicer people in my life. I’m one lucky person to know and consider David and Luke as my friends.
David’s Thoughts On Walter
Not only is Walter exceptionally, warm, kind and gracious but he has a beautiful eclectic persona to go with it. I love how he loves his wife Angela and their daughters. It’s reflected in his photography that is emotional and impactful, especially his black and white editorial images. What he does for others in our industry through Mystic Seminars is remarkable. I’m so proud of the fact that he’s led it’s growth for over 10 years!
When we were at Mystic, I sincerely enjoyed the family atmosphere and sense of kinship amongst everyone. It’s an intimate enough event to feel like you can have in-depth conversations and get to know other photographers who share our passion.
Why Walter Van Dusen Is A Master Photographer
Not many wedding photographers can say they spent time on a US Navy fast attack submarine, but that’s part of what makes Walter unique. First studying photography in the Navy, he found wedding photography shortly after his daughter was born (she’s now in college). Experiencing her birth showed him the value of seeing a wedding day through the eyes of a family member.
Professional Photographers of America (PPA) recognizes Walter as a Master of Photography and Photographic Craftsman as well as a Certified Professional Photographer.
From a small new England town, made famous in the coming of age movie Mystic Pizza, Walter founded Mystic Seminars in 2005. Seeing a gap between huge conventions and small workshops, he created an outlet tailored for wedding photographers to share and network.
Since then, it has grown to become one of the best conferences for speakers, attendees, and sponsors to interact on the same level. The focus is on making real and meaningful connections and bringing inspiration forward through everyone.
Many of the attendees over the past 10 years consider it they place they made lifelong friends. That the speakers there made them laugh, cry, and think in ways that had a positive effect on their lives and business.
Mystic now has a new West Coast home in Portland. Watch this 7-minute video and see what the buzz is all about.
